Mother Goose is Running for His Life

Picture

“Mother Goose Is Running for His Life” is a rather peculiar and entertaining episode of Charlie’s Angels from Season 2, airing in February 1978. The story begins when Leland Swinnerton, head of the Mother Goose Toy Company, refuses to sell his business despite mounting pressure. In response, his company begins suffering a baffling string of accidents—an exploding toy train, sabotaged machinery, and other dangers that seem too coincidental to be mere bad luck.

Charlie assigns the Angels to protect Swinnerton and get to the root of the sabotage. Sabrina and Kelly go undercover to unearth clues, while Kris and Bosley trail behind, digging deeper into suspicious activity within the company. In a standout twist, Kris disguises herself as a life‑size doll to infiltrate restricted areas disguised as a toy, catching employees off guard and revealing secrets no one expects.

As the plot unfolds, it becomes clear that the threat comes not just from outside forces but from inside Swinnerton’s company itself. Gordon Roclair, the head of design, is pushing for a shift toward more violent, sensational toys, and he becomes a key suspect. Working with a criminal businessman, Tony Phelan, he sees the sabotage as a way to force Swinnerton’s hand or reduce his control. A peripheral character named Donna also plays a dangerous role by leaking sensitive information to the highest bidder, muddying loyalties and trust.

Tensions rise, red herrings abound, and the Angels set a trap to force a showdown between the internal conspirators and the outside criminals. In the end they manage to expose the traitors, restore order at Mother Goose, and preserve Swinnerton’s ownership. The episode closes with a lighthearted touch: Swinnerton presents dolls modeled after the Angels as a gesture of appreciation.

The episode’s strengths lie in its bold mixture of whimsy and suspense. The idea of dangerous toys in a children’s world is unnerving in its absurdity, and Kris’s doll disguise caps off that imaginative crossover between playfulness and peril. The internal betrayal angle gives the conflict emotional stakes beyond mere action. But the plot sometimes leans toward implausibility—exploding toys, coincidental reveals, and tricky setups can stretch the suspension of disbelief.

“Mother Goose Is Running for His Life” stands out in Angels lore because it isn’t just another crime‑solving tale. It leans into theatricality, oddball set pieces, and creative disguises. For fans who enjoy when the show stretches beyond its usual boundaries, this episode offers a memorable, quirky ride through a toy world turned dangerous.
